A month ago, I was invited to the Square Enix Media Tour at Mèxico City which practically was an event for showing up some of the new additions that will arrive in the Heavensward expansion of FFXIV A Realm Reborn.
The event consisted in a brief presentation of Heavensward contents, gameplay footage and the chance of interviewing Naoki Yoshida, producer of the game.
The following interview it’s written as it was spoken by Yoshida’s interpreter and it has just a few fixes for redaction purposes.
Note: Like this interview and post was written back in April, maybe some of the things mentioned as confirmed or announced, have been already confirmed in the meantime this was published. I apologize for the delay.
-Naoki Yoshida (NY) Thank you for taking time of your busy schedule to attend to this media event.
I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of information in the presentation earlier but we elect to jump into if you have any question for us.
-Of course we have questions! Let me start with the first one: -How the new areas of “Heavensward” compare into the ones we have already seen in Realm Reborn in terms of difficulty and size?
NY: In terms of the size of the areas that will be introduced, compared into one zone of Realm Reborn, Heavensward’s areas are one and a half or two times larger in scale so, simply put, the area in which you can explore is going to be bigger.
In terms of exploration, in a Realm Reborn, of course the game was created with 3D graphics, but travel was mostly on ground, so it’s sort like a two dimensional kind of transport, but with the introduction of the flying mounts and once you are able to utilize those, it opens up verticality, so, you have areas that you could have never gone to, that you’ve been traveled only by land so it opens up new areas for discovering rare monsters or treasure boxes for treasure hunt missions, so in terms of being able to discover is also it’s going to be vastly different from the previous a Realm Reborn Areas.
In terms of difficulty, it’s hard to specify in a special amount of words but we are going to be raising the level cap so you can level your character up to level 60, so I’m sure it’s going to be new experiences trough leveling all the different classes and jobs, that you have trough the new level cap.
-Now that we are going to be able to create airships, what is the process to create them? What are the requirements to get the new flying mounts and airships?
NY: I’ll explain the easier part first (laughs) In terms of the single mount, the single raider airship it will be obtainable as you progress through the story, there’s a certain moment within the story line that will enable you to get the single raider airship.
In terms of crafting your own airship, first and foremost you need to be in a free company that already owns a house like housing. So the requirement to be able to do airship crafting is of course you need to have a free company house and then you will have to sort of build a workshop to build your airship in the basement on housing, those are the two requirements.
In terms of the actual building of the free company airship, the airship will be split up into four different parts: you have the engine, the body of the ship, and the sails that enable the flight of the airship as well, and the haul, the deck of the ship.
So those four parts are going to be the major elements of the airship so your free company will decide on which parts to incorporate and that’s how you build the airship.
As you choose the different parts, each part actually have their own set of parameters and strengths and weaknesses, so you kind of decide on which parts you want to incorporate and build your ship and then g o out exploring and the parts will gain experience and then you will be able to upgrade them and advance in your exploration and so.
It’s going to be a very large scale type of gameplay that will be available throughout the 3.5 X patch series.
-So, the game is going to be arriving very soon on MAC platform, and the Havensward expansion it’s going to be arriving on PS3 and PS4, let’s see a little bit on the future, do you plan to keep supporting the PS3 version of the game, even though is considered now as an old generation console?
NY: In terms of PS3 support, and this has been mentioned in the past as well but, the patch 3.X series beginning with Heavensward and the subsequent patch Updates, we will continue to support PS3 a 100%. With that regard please be assured that we will be continuing the support.
Now, a small group of core designers including me we already talking about the far new expansion or what we call 4.0 and talking about the design and what we want to accomplish for the future expansion that it’s coming so, we will have to make a decision.
Can we achieve what we want to do, that pillar that we want to achieve with 4.0 on the PS3 platform?
Depending on that answer whether we can support it or not we kind of dictate or decision on whether or not we will continue to support the ps3 or not because, as you mentioned, it is becoming an older generation console and the PS3 has been around for almost 10 years and by the time 4.0 is released there will be over 10 years old so we will have to make a decision when we get there to make sure that we can achieve what we want to do on the PS3 and then make that decision.
But just a fact that we were having flying mounts becoming available in this current expansion, imagine having all those flying mounts properly working on a PS3 platform, that is quite an accomplishment (laughs)
-When Lighting Returns was released, there was an special event featuring Lightning, so, could something like this would be possible with Final Fantasy XV? I bet everyone wants to see Noctis in some place in Eorzea.
NY: I’m actually friend with Final Fantasy XV director, Mr. Tabata, he has also come to Mexico before for promotion of Final Fantasy Type-0, but we have been in conversations, we have been talking about “Oh wouldn’t be cool to being able to collaborate on a Final Fantasy XV cross promotion with Final Fantasy XIV, but we don’t know exactly what are we going to do just yet but we definitely are considering doing something.
We were talking about having the car from XV but like it’s a ground mount maybe it doesn’t looks as cool so maybe we may have to consider it being a flying mount (everybody laughs).
-Allright that was my last question. Thank you very much for your time.
My “I’m too excited to smile” face.
The Heavensward presentation showed some new footage of the new classes, jobs and the new character race called Au Ra.
Also some gameplay videos of the new classes, Dark Knight, Astrologian and Machinist, were showed. They remarked that the Dark Knight will be the first class that can use a two handed Sword and that’s because fans have asked for it a lot on the forums.
Alexander was introduced as a new raid Dungeon and there was some footage of this mechanical “holy” beast. They mentioned that Alexander is massive in size, in fact, HE is the dungeon. (If I understood well, we will explore Alexander’s innards then)
Also, new footage of the flying mount was revealed showing the dragon and a black Chocobo. We were shown a Single Raider airship too and some new places that will be introduced in Heavensward as well.
Finally, they confirmed that the Early Access will be on June 19th. Heavensward launches on June 23th.
